2nd idea for film opening

Film opening idea 2:

General idea and storyline:

There is a lawyer that works at a firm in New York City. Later down the road after working there for the past couple of years the character finally realises how corrupt the firms system is and wants to do something about it. After a while he figures out that they come to decisions that should not be supported such as allowing people get away with rape and murder. He feels like he should do something about this situation by taking legal action but they are to strong to take down as an individual. He takes this further into the depths of murder and wants to erase the leader of the conpany to end the lies.

Setting:

As it is based within New York City so tall built up area with a lot of buildings would be needed in order to make it believable. Another way to make it more effective to to use a building which has offices and court rooms to make the scenes that are needed.

Music:

When the intro to the film begins it should start with quite upbeat music which then stops. Throughout the rest of the film use quite dramatic music or depressing songs in order to make it feel as if the character is feeling like his mood.

Costume:

The actors would have to wear suits in order to make it feel realistic. Casual clothing is not associated with lawyers as they can afford higher class expenive clothing.

Lighting:

Bright lighting in order to show documents shown withing the camera and body language for emotions. Have lights used that are in a standard office for the realistic theme to it, and make it feel like we are there.

Editing/camera:

As there will be a lot of dialogue such as conversations between characters, the use if cutting between one anothrt will be effective as they speak. Over the shoulder shots also would be used to display who they are speaking to and so on.

Saw The Final Chapter

The saw films come under the horror genre, which appeals to those who enjoy those types of movies. As it comes under the horror genre, there is a lot of tense, scary situations, and they are also known for violence and gore. As viewers of the "Saw" films are interested in gory atmospheres, it has an effective introduction as it starts with a typical saw trap which involves death. By having this, it draws in the fans and persuades them to keep watching.

The first scene involves two guys fighting over a woman that had cheated on them both. It then has to have at least one person die. This event takes place in a public location in a street so passing pedestrians can watch the horror take place. The director may have done this to create and display a point about today's society in how we enjoy watching these sorts of things take place. Only one person attempts to save them but it does not work, in which they then give up., implicating that we don't try hard enough and give up easily.

Another point that could be taken from this is that people should work together in order to survive, even if it means sacrificing something you love. The clip shows that if two people don't get along with eachother. They are forced with a difficult situation, you set your dislikes apart and work together.

There are several camera angles used including close ups which promote the characters emotions that are being given off, and make us sympaphise with the current situation. It can also add more fear and highlight how scared they are. As well as that, there are camera angles outside from the audiences point of view, made for us to feel like we are apart of the audience and make it feel like we are watching it take place. The camera also makes it looks professional from the use of "match on action", using many cameras to film the action and make it look fluid. This technique also allows us to see the whole set, and establish a set of the surroundings.

No soundtrack is used during the scene to emphasise the danger and tension taking place. The sounds of pain are more obvious therefore more thrilling for the audience to view.

First idea for the film intro;

General background/storyline:

A character that was once a hit man hired by a company that operated within that area. His ole in the company was to track down targets and kill them for rewards. He has moved on later in his life reflecting on his terrible past and thinking about the people who he had killed once upon a time. All he wants is to live a normal life again but that is not an option for the previous company he worked for as they wont let anyone just leave them. His only way out is death and they send out people to track him down and attempt to kill him. To finally escape the dead end that his life had come to he must then take down the company he worked for by killing them all so they cant hurt anyone else.

Setting;

New/modern fashioned graveyard where the main character is stood over some graves staring at them and his past. For an effective setting and environment we would need moody weather in order to create a depressing scene.

Music:

Use sad themed soundtracks in order to make the grave scene depressing and sad whilst the character is staring that the graves. Could also use the same music once the two guys appear in order to try and kill the main character or change to more hyped dramatic music.

Camera:

Could use close ups of the main character to show his emotion and body language. Also close ups of the grave stones to show the people that he once tracked down and killed in his previous life.

Editing:

Insert text merging into the background and setting to make it more believable and real but not take out the whole reality aspect. Once the company appears to track down the main character have them run towards the camera but whilst editing make it slow motion to then add a dramatic effect. For the film title it will be implemented after the people enter the intro which is then set off by multiple gun shots onto a black screen, with he film title fading in, like his past fading back into his life once again.

Lighting:

Quite dark themed to create a sad atmosphere and depressing feel to it, also implements misery and sadness. A good time for this lighting would be with moody weather such as cloudy, because bright sunny weather would create a totally different storyline and feel to the intro.

Camera Movement:

Tracking: Whole camera moves from point A to point B.
Panning: Camera remains at a single point, but the position angle moves left to right or right to left.
Tilting: Fixed camera, but lean camera up or down on the vertical axis.
Dollying: Camera moves forward and back. Either move entire camera or zoom in and out.
Pedestal: Whole camera moves up and down on vertical axis, camera is in a fixed position.

Some camera angles:
High The camera is placed above and looks down on the subject or object. It is used to make the character look small and also indicate that the character is weak or inferior.
EyeAn eye angle places the audience on eye-level with the character. It is used to indicate that the character is on equal footing with the audience. It suggests reality.
LowThe camera is placed looking up on the subject or object. It is used to make the character look big and indicates that the character is powerful and dominant.
Overhead/
Bird's eye
The camera is placed overhead or directly above the object or scene.Characters and objects are made to look small and vulnerable. A character or object could be followed at a different speed or pace.

Some camera shots:
Close-upCUThis is a shot taken of a person’s head from just above the head to the top of the upper chest. It can also be used to film an object at close range. It contains little or no background. This used to introduce a character and allows the character to show emotions. It can be used to heighten tension.
Medium close-upMCUThis shows the upper half of the body. The shot is taken from the above the head to lower chest.Good for conversation between two characters.
Medium shotMSThis shows half of the body. The shot is taken from above the head to just below the waist. This allows you to get to know the character more closely by viewing their facial expressions and body language.
Long shotLSThis shows the whole person and other characters, but the background dominates the shot. This allows the viewer to understand the relationship between the characters and their environment.

First level of realism means selecting the right:
- Actors
- Props
- Location

Second level of realism means how the drama is filmed:
- Lighting
- Use of camera
- Choice of shot
- Music (non diegetic sound)
- Editing

Third level of realism:
- The finished product on TV
- Actual TV drama viewed by the audience
- Audience opinions of drama, do they believe it?

Diegetic sound - natural sound
Non diegetic sound - Sound added for audience effect (music, voiceover)
Emphatic sound - Exaggerated sound effect, edited over diegetic sound.
180 degree rule:
Camera. positron and eye line, when you film a scene using separate shots, it is important that people understand where everything in that scene is.

Shot/reverse shot:
Film technique where one character is shown looking at another character, and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character. Since the characters are shown facing in opposite directions the viewer assumes that they are looking at each other.

Match on action:

This refers to the video and camera editing of the film sequences by making it move fluently. These are shown by making sure the cameras cut from one shot to another that matches the previous camera shot. An example of match on action is changing the camera angle during a conversation between two people to showcase their faces whilst the speak.

An example of match on action from Friends:

This scene from Friends shows Chandler enter through the door, then close it, then kiss Monica. all these different actions that are within that certain scene have a camera angle to make it more effective. This is a good example as there are no obvious cuts from moving cameras as it flows perfectly. The editing and camera usage makes it seem as if it was in one shot, and no cuts had been made.

First camera angle whilst he walks through the door:

Second camera angle after he walks in a goes to shut the door:

These camera shots allow us to view the action more effectively and lets us see what is going on at the current time. The scene flows very smoothly and the camera editing is not noticeable.

A good introduction to a film for me that catches my attention is when there is some form of tense  scene, or something where there is a great atmosphere. These can include such films as Saw as they always have some sort of tense situation occurring at the beginning, like life or death. My favourite genres of films are either horror/action/comedy. I like horror films such as gory and death as it can be tense and I find it very entertaining. Saw comes under this category because of the traps that people are placed into and the gore that is involved.

As I also like comedy films a good example is "American Pie" as it is my type of humour. I like rude comedy as it is very funny in my eyes.
